Transforming Lives
People tell us how A&K has changed their lives.
Students and SingOUT! attendees regularly share that engaging in our programming has them feeling “uplifted”, “more connected to their community”, “mentally stimulated”. They also share that they “met someone new” and that they will “use what they learned” after the event has ended.
“My coworker and I both said our cheeks hurt from smiling. I have underestimated every 55+ I’ve ever met, and I’d like to hire several of them for personal morning pep talks.”
“When we began, I felt a little ridiculous for having such a limited set of steps, AND then when we added the singing, I loved just stepping out. How fun! And as good as (or better than) Silver Sneakers!”
“I’ve learned “We can make new friends and have fun at any age.”
“I feel safe here. I was given the permission to go wild.”
“The energy, hope and enthusiasm the cast showed makes me forget my worries and be inspired to have hope.”
“In a way it saved my life. When I came into Alive & Kickin my whole life changed. I had a reason to live.”
“The entire A&K family are my rescuers, my life support, my strength and literally the food and oxygen that keeps me going and surviving the great loss of my husband. I look forward to each new day and they help me make it through. I will survive!”
“With the singing, breathing, and movement, I am stronger, I can get out of the chair now. It’s the bonus of being involved.”
“I’ve been having problems believing. This was just what I needed.”

Meet Michael L.
“I knew that if I were chosen to be a part of Alive and Kickin following my audition, I would enjoy singing some great Rock ‘n Roll. I didn’t know that it would have such a powerful impact on me.”
A few years ago, after four years of doctors trying to figure out what was happening to me, I was ultimately diagnosed with a terminal illness. Lewy Body Dementia. Basically it is a combination of Parkinson’s Disease and Dementia. My physical symptoms prevent me from having the mobility that once allowed me to play sports, dance, or drive. I can no longer play my guitar. I am confined to a wheelchair. The cognitive blockades often obstruct my memory and thinking.
After the initial shock of the diagnosis, and with the help of a team of doctors and medications, I accepted my situation and made a conscious effort not to give up living until I was actually dead. I wouldn’t let my disease prevent me from being as active physically and psychologically as I was determined to be. However, I did not realize that something was missing.
I currently live in an Adult Care Facility because I need certain supports. One of our new residents told me with great enthusiasm about a singing group of Seniors. Though some of them had mobility issues that required their using wheelchairs, walkers or canes, the group performed concerts, singing and dancing their hearts out.
It felt like it would be perfect for me.
And it is.
I am 79 years old. A retired actor, director, producer, writer, teacher. A widower with two very wonderful and capable grown children, and an adult grandson. I didn’t understand that though I was determined to stay as actively alive as I could, I no longer had a real sense of responsibility or purpose other than to myself.
I didn’t realize I was missing that. I didn’t realize it was important. Until I found it once again.
Now after becoming part of the group, my family, my friends, the staff where I live all tell me that I am sitting much taller in my chair, that my eyes have a new sparkle. I have a new electric energy running through me.”
I once again have passion. Purpose. A need and responsibility to do my work for the group and help make us sound and look as exciting as we can be. The work is demanding, especially with my limitations, but it is equally as fulfilling and joyous.
I am a part of something that needs me as much as I need it. I now have a thrilling reason to stay alive and kicking! – cast member Michael L.
