Generations Learn from Each Other

Youth Music Exchanges Benefit Everyone

Members of our Senior Rock Ensemble join youth in their choirs and theater programs to share music and stories, create and perform, and learn from one another. These inter-generational exchanges are designed to bridge divides and create belonging, reframe aging for a younger generation, and increase empathy. They also help address an epidemic of loneliness and isolation experienced by people of all ages.

Through creativity, music and mentorship, lifelong friendships are formed, and everyone comes away feeling inspired and valued. It’s a win-win!

– Beth Hellstedt, Maple Grove Senior High Choir & Musical Theatre Director

“We had about 40 minutes of amazing reflection and conversation today in choir. Every one of my students was extremely moved and transformed by their experience. Thank you thank you thank you!!”

Classes to Enrich Your Creative Aging Experience

*This is the mantra of A&K’s Artistic Director.

Whether you’re looking for something new to learn, aiming to perform, or merely to polish your skills, we offer group classes and workshops designed to help all-age adults age creatively. Connect with others through improv or learn to tell your story. Learn how to read music, write a song, or care for your voice as you age. These fun, affordable, accessible classes, led by professional artists and instructors, will build skills, uplift, stimulate and connect you with a community of like-minded people.

We also offer opportunities to join the conversation about aging creatively and with purpose. Be inspired by attending a show with a “talk-back” where you can learn from others, gain insights into our cast and process and contribute to the dialogue. Watch for special events with experts or invite us out to your community to share more about creative aging and Alive & Kickin.

Senior Rock Ensemble

The Senior Rock Ensemble

Alive & Kickin is home to the premier senior rock group that brings music, stories, inspiration and joy to audiences in the Twin Cities and beyond.

Songs. Stories. Connection.

“I didn’t know I would still be performing at my age (soon to be 85!) and with my disabilities!”

As singers and storytellers, these older adults are on a mission to challenge the common perception of aging by following their passions, saying yes, when others say no and rockin’ every moment … The ensemble includes people from all walks of life. While there is no age restriction, each brings a lifetime of personal experiences to share—the struggles, the joy, and accomplishments that make each life unique. Members have joined us in their 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90s! Together they entertain and inspire all-age audiences as they explore rock & roll and pop music, from the 1960’s through today, filtered through their lens of experience.

Want to sing with us? Come to an Audition!

If you dream of being part of a group where you can celebrate your love of music, share your life stories, and inspire audiences, your dream is only an audition away!  When there are openings, auditions are held in the summer for aspiring cast members. Rehearsals are weekly September-May and concerts are all-year round.

If you have questions and would like more information, email our Artistic Director or submit the form on our Auditions page.

And now…introducing the rockSTARS of our shows.. The Cast!
